Summary: This week was pretty similar to last week. In Humanities we had work time almost everyday for our 1000 Word Human Subject piece. In chemistry we coated more paper with our emulsions and we learned about the chemical photo developing process and even tried to develop some photos midweek but that did not go as planned. Humanities: This week in humanities we had lots of time to edit and finalize our 1000 Word Writing Piece. Click the button below to view my writing. We also finished reading our John Steinbeck novels. Phase 2 Landscape Photo Plan:
For my landscape photo I don't really have a grasp on what I want to take a photo of yet. I think I want a mix of photos to show. I really like camping so I think it would be cool if I planned a camping trip to Julian or Mt. Laguna to take photos of the mountains and fields, but I also think that it would be cool to take pictures of the city at night because I think it would be a cool contrast between the two and they are only less than an hour away from each other. Chemistry: How it works: Photo Synthetic Emulsion Developing Process When you combine silver nitrate and sodium chloride it becomes silver chloride and sodium nitrate. Silver chloride is a silver precipitant in this reaction. Atoms share electrons, so the chloride ion wants to take an electron from the silver ion thus creating the bond between the tow. Since all electrons are negatively charged and all ions are neutrally charged, when the chloride ion gets an electron it becomes negatively charged and the silver ion becomes positively charged because it lost an electron. That creates a crystal then when light hits the crystal it breaks the bond and is frees up the silver ion which then becomes metallic silver once we put it in the developer bath because the developer adds the lost electron and it becomes neutral thus making it metallic silver and metallic silver's natural color is black. From there, you put the photo in the stop bath which stops the development because it takes away the leftover electrons. The fixer bath then dissolves the remaining silver chloride salts that weren't exposed to the light. Lastly, the wash just washes away the excess chemicals on the paper, because if there are any leftover chemicals then slowly over time the they will turn black ruining the photo. 2 Questions: What is an anti atom? How long do you need to expose the emulsion if you put it on glass?

Summary: This week was pretty boring. We only had chemistry twice this week but both times were very productive. We coated our first round of papers the we will develop in the next couple weeks, and we also had a mini photoshop workshop. In humanities we continued to read our John Steinbeck novels, and finished up our Dorothea Lange 1000 Word assignment. We also had a lot of work time towards the end of the week to finish assignments in any of our three classes. Humanities: This week our main focus was finishing our 1000 word writing pieces. We were given lots of work time during class to finish and to get critique from our peers. Click here to view my complete draft of my 1000 word writing piece. For my human photo I am going to take it next week when we go to Balboa Park. I want to take it at Balboa Park because there are lots of things and people to take photos of. I do not know who I am going to take a picture of yet, but I figure that if I take enough photos I am positive I will come out with a good one that I am proud of. Chemistry: This week on Wednesday we had a photoshop workshop. We learned how to process black and white and color photos. We picked one of the final portrait pictures and imported it to photoshop. From there we adjusted the channels and levels in the histogram to change the brightness and colors so the image would pop more. We also cropped the photo a little that way the background wasn't taking up to much space. Below is the image I processed. Summary: This week we really got the ball rolling with our project. In Chemistry we were very focused on creating our dark room, and by the end of the week we had a fully operational dark room where we can develop photos. In Humanities we were introduced to John Steinbeck. We first watched Steinbeck's acceptance speech for when he won the nobel prize in literature and we discussed what the deeper meaning was. That speech was a way for us to get a sense of Steinbeck's personality and tone before we started reading "Of Mice and Men" or "Cannery Row." Humanities: This week we were given our first benchmark in our Light project. We were told to pick one of Dorothea Lange's photos she took from the great depression and then write five different perspectives (historical, social, personal, composition, etc) We called this 1000 Words because if you add up all the words from each perspective then you should have about 1000 words. This week we also started reading novels by John Steinbeck. I have already read "Of Mice and Men" so I am reading "Cannery Row" . 1000 Word For my 1000 word piece the perspectives I chose were
Cannery Row
After reading the first two chapters I am bit confused. They have introduced Mack and his boys, Lee Chong, Dora's (the whore house), the Doc and a few others. I understand that they all live in the same small town and the Lee Chong has a lot of money and you should not cross him, but other than that I really am lost. I am excited to see how this book will unfold and I am hopeful that the more I read, the more I will understand. Chemistry: This week in chemistry we started and finished creating our dark room. There were many different teams that were in charge of certain aspects of creating the dark room. There was the entryway team who were in charge of creating a way for us to enter and exit the classroom without letting any light come in the room. It is important that no light enters the room because then it will expose (ruin) our emulsions and we will have to start the whole process over again. There was also the light team whose job was to create safe lights. The way they did this was by putting paper bags around LED lights, the bag gave the light an ember glow that would not expose our emulsions. There were many more groups who were in charge of cleaning up the room or creating apparatuses but it's time to move on to what my team was. My team is the chemical team. My team is in charge of combining the chemicals needed to create our emulsions. We handled silver nitrate, fun fact you will know if you got it on your skin because your skin will be stained black. We also handled gelatin, and sodium chloride. Another big part of developing our photos in the dark room is the apparatuses used to make the emulsion in. At each table an apparatus is set up and each apparatus can make emulsion for two groups. The apparatus consists of a ring stand, a hot plate, two beakers (one for each group) a container for a water bath, a stir stick, a thermometer, and three clamps (one to hold the thermometer, and the other two to suspend the beakers). The water bath goes right on the hot plate. All of the clamps are have the same base which is the ring stand, so both beakers are suspended in the water using two large clamps, and the thermometer is suspended in the water using a small clamp that looks some what like a fork. Once that is set up you can go ahead and shut off the light and create your emulsion in the beakers. The picture below gives a better understanding. Summary: We started off the week by reviewing photos from around the world and discussing how we feel about them. In chemistry we wrapped up or safety unit, and we created some homemade spotlights to use in dark rooms. We also created a “studio” so we could take portrait photos of ourselves. We also started to really get into the great depression era by looking at some photos and reading Harvest Gypsies by: John Steinbeck and then we went on to write a piece responding to the article, and lastly we read an article on Trump’s immigration order and we read a poem by Emma Lazarus and created t-shirt designs based off of the poem. Humanities: This week in humanities we did quite a few things. We took portrait photos of ourselves in a "studio" we set up in an empty classroom. We read a poem by Emma Lazarus called "The New Colossus" which is the poem on the Statue of Liberty and we then created a t-shirt design based off of the quote. One of the big things we began diving into the Great Depression. We got into small groups and researched certain things about it. My group was in charge of what caused the great depression. From there we read Article 1 of John Steinbeck's Harvest Gypsies 8 part series. After reading it we had to respond and write a 250-300 word essay to this question based off of paragraph 21 "Does our society really depend on creating and maintaining a peon class"? Click the button below to read my response. Chemistry:
This week we did a few things. To get "tested" on our knowledge about lab safety from last week we played a game of Jeopardy. It was a fun way to make sure we understand how to act and handle things in a lab and my group ended up with the 3100 points. We also created these hand held "spotlights" so we could take some pictures in a dark room to practice for later on in the project. We ended the week with having to look and respond to the equation below. What do the following two equations teach you about Chemistry? 1. AgNO3 + NaCL = NaNO3 + AgCL 2. AB + CD = CB + AD A= Ag= Silver B= NO3= Nitrate C=Na= Sodium D=CL= Chlorine It teaches me that chemistry is confusing because I do not really understand what these equations are, all I know is that we are going to use them to create our dark room photos. Summary: This week we got an overview of what our project is going to be about. Our project this semester is called Light. Light is a photography project, and that's what this week was mainly focused around. We learned about what makes something a subject, the different controls of a camera such as aperture, ISO, and shutter speed. We also learned about the basics of how to use light when taking a photo and how it affects is. In chemistry we also went over pseudo science for a few minutes. The big thing we went over was lab safety, because there are a lot of hazards and potential dangers that I sure didn’t know about. Humanities: This week we looked at and analyzed a photo of Elizabeth Eckford. Elizabeth was a part of the Little Rock Nine, and Elizabeth was the first african american girl to attend an all white school. The point of this assignment was to try and look at this photo through a different lens (political, social, historical, technical etc.)and then write a 200 word piece on it. Click the button below to read my piece. Chemistry:
This week we dove into lab safety, and what is and isn't appropriate behavior. After two days of discussing the rules of a lab we had to get into a group of 2 or 3. In that group we had to pick a rule that we wanted to show through a picture. The rules that my group was in charge of was always label chemicals. |
