Phase 4 Reflection:
My favorite part about this last phase was that we were given the freedom to do what we wanted. If we had an idea we could do it. There were no bumpers restricting us to only certain things, it was just what we wanted. I have recently gained interest in Criminal Justice and so I kind of knew that I wanted to do something with that, so I did. My big idea for the last phase was to interview women in high risk jobs to get a better understanding of what it is like to be a women in that career. Along with the interview I would also take their photograph because it is a photography project. I picked four jobs; firefighter, police officer, lifeguard and marines. Getting a contact for women in these jobs wasn't to difficult because I had a lot of help from friends who had connections. I have a close family friend who is a firefighter and he gave me firefighter Captain Margo Johnson's contact and he also helped me with contacting a lifeguard named Lonnie who gave me the contact for Hannah Lukasik and I had a classmate who helped me get an interview with marine Master Sergeant Rosanna Gregory (I only interview her because she did not want her photo taken). The only one I did by myself was police Sergeant Lisa McKean. One of the frustrating things was making initial contact with each women. It was difficult because after I would email them it would take anywhere from one day to one week for them to get back to me. Eventually they would respond but then came the next hurdle which was setting up an interview date. They all had busy schedules because of their jobs and I had a busy schedule because of softball and school. I ended up interviewing one of them while I was in school, one on a Saturday morning at nine a.m. and the other two after school. When planning my final phase I had originally said that I was going to write a paper about what it is like to be a women in those kinds of jobs using quotes and things that I took away from my interviews with each women but because my interviews were so spread apart I never got to it. I also read a book by Tanya Biank called Undaunted: The Real Story of Servicewomen in Today's Military. It followed the lives of four women; Brigadier General Angela Salinas, Second Lieutenant Bergan Flannigan, Sergeant Amy Stokley and Major Candice O'Brien. Although it took a while for me to really engulf myself and get into reading i'm glad I did because it was really eye opening and inspirational learning about these four women and how hard it is at times to be in the military while also juggling marriages, kids, nay sayers and anything else that could possibly hold them back from doing the job that they loved. All in all, I really loved and enjoyed this part of the project because it allowed me to get a glimpse of these women's lives as a firefighter, police officer, lifeguard and marine and after interviewing each women I can say that these jobs are starting to look more attracting to me as a future career. Summary: This week is the final week of weekly blog posts before we go into exhibition mode. We are starting our fourth and final phase of the project and we will present it at our TPOL. Phase Four: The goal of phase four is for us to reflect on our school year and think about our strengths and work on our areas of growth. With that we are supposed to take a picture that represents our growth and we will then present it at our transitional presentation of learning. Click the button below to learn about my project and read my phase four proposal document. Approval:
In order to get my phase four project approved we had to sit down with our two teachers and two peers and review my proposal document. We went over it together and then my teachers asked any questions they had for me and gave me some helpful feedback to make my project stronger.
Trip Reflection: This week we went on our class trip to Lake Cuyamaca. I didn't go up until Monday night because I had a softball game. The objects I wanted to capture were the iris nebula and the Milky Way. Unfortunately I did not capture either because I didn't stay up late enough on Monday night to capture the Milky Way and on Tuesday night the group in front of me used the telescope for a while and by the time it was my group's turn the sun was rising so we couldn't photograph the iris nebula. Because I did not get a photo of either objects I wanted to capture, we might to a smaller one night outing somewhere in San Diego to try again. On Tuesday night though I did mess around with my camera a little bit and just took some photos of the landscape around me. I also messed around with writing with light. What is Something You Will Remember 10 Years From Now? On this camping trip lots of people brought hammocks (myself and tent mates included) so that was a very popular thing to do. With that being said there were only a few things you could do during the day such as; fishing, sleeping, and hiking. Wednesday night was when my group was taking our deep sky photos at 3:00 a.m. so I slept that afternoon. I will remember this because my friends and I got four hammocks and walked around to the other side of the lake, set up the hammocks. We got in the hammock at about 12:30 p.m. and left at got out at about 5:00 p.m. Out of those four and a half hours we were in the hammocks we slept for about three of them. It was so nice and peaceful just hanging out and talking and enjoying the scenery around us. Some other things that I am going to remember are staying up until 4:00 a.m with my friends just staring up at the stars, playing card games that got really heated, waking up at the crack of dawn to watch the sunrise and so much more. It was such a fun trip that I will probably remember it for a very long time.Below I have included a slideshow of some of the photos I took on the trip. Summary:
This week was dedicated to mainly getting ready and prepared for our camping trip next week. A big thing we focused on was making our hit list of objects or settings that we wanted to capture next week when we go to Lake Cuyamaca. Another portion of our time was dedicated to creating a packing list of the items we need to bring next week. Hit List:
Describe what the object are? A nebula is a colorful cloud of gas and dust in space. The Milky Way is a galaxy and it is where our solar system is located. When are they in the sky? Where? This iris nebula is in the sky almost all night but your best chance at taking a photo of it is between 2:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. The iris nebula is located in the Cepheus constellation and has a magnitude of of 6.8. The Milky Way starts rising in the south at about 12:00 a.m. and is fully in the sky from 3:00 a.m until the sun rises. Click the button below to view my packing list. Summary: This week we did a few things. In humanities we started reading a book called Light by Bruce Watson. In chemistry we learned more about the chemistry behind the epoxy we are using for our final landscape photos. We also dove more into what light is. Humanities: Light by Bruce Watson is about light. We have only read the intro and first chapter of the book, but what I gather so far is that it is a book about how everyone thinks of light. It is also about how different scientists, philosophers and artists discovered different things about light. After reading the intro of this book we were asked to write a 350+ answering the following question. How does the work of scientists, artists and philosophers lead to wonder and curiosity? Click the button below to read my writing. Chemistry:
It was an informative week for me in chemistry. We did a lab on polymers and created slime which took me back to when I was in fifth grade and made this substance called flubber. After we learned about bonds and polymers and conducted the experiment we were asked to write a 250+ word writing piece about the experiment and what we learned. Click the first button to read about the experiment. We also watched an episode of Cosmos. We took a trip with Neil deGrasse Tyson and learned more about light. Which might I add, blew my mind. It was so cool to learn more about the science behind light and why things are certain colors or why rainbows are a thing. After we watched the episode we were asked to answer the following questions. What can we learn from light? What information is in light? Click the button on the right to read my responses to the questions above. Summary: This week we had a lot of project work time. We started printing out our landscape photos and the glossy metallic photo paper and coating them with resin. We also had time to finish any work that wasn't complete. Humanities: With the start of printing out photos and coating with resin we were given the assignment to really look into each step of the process. Process: Photo + Processing + Metallic Paper + Epoxy Coat = Beautiful Photos What role does each step play? Each step plays a very important role in the creation process from start to finish with our landscape photos. You start with a high quality photo. High quality is important because we are going to be blowing it up to 13'' by 19'' and if the quality is not good then it will turn out pixelated. Then comes the processing which is tricky because when it gets printed out on the metallic paper the colors change so you need to process it differently so the photo will turn out the way you want. Metallic paper makes the photo turn out really cool because when light hits it it reflects and changes the dynamic of the photo a lot. Lastly, you have the epoxy coat which brings out more color once and it protects the photo from LED lights and heat. Chemistry: Both classes were combined so we did the same thing in both classes. Process: Photo + Processing + Metallic Paper + Epoxy Coat = Beautiful Photos My Final Landscape Photo: What is the relationship with light? Light is all around us. Everywhere we look there is some form of light reflecting off of surfaces. In the final landscape photos we are using there is light and because we use the metallic glossy photo paper it really makes the light. Metallic reflects light so when you at our photos from different angles the light hit the metallic paper and reflects the photo changing the color and light. How does each step of the process involve and/ or change light? Almost every step changes the light. The processing changes the light because we edit the contrast and colors and vibrance and saturation which changes the color of the photo to make things pop more. the metallic paper changes light especially to because metallic reflects light so whenever you look at the photo in different light it changes the light that is in the photo. Lastly, the coat changes the light because it really just brings out more color and more light to enhance the photo. Why is it important to frame and exhibit work? It is important to showcase your work because it helps build up self confidence and and it is a very fulfilling experience when you see your own work hanging on a wall where it can be admired by several people other than yourself. On top of that if someone else likes it enough to purchase it then you really know you did a good job. Summary: This week in humanities we got an assignment to look at John Steinbeck's intro to Of Mice and Men and find where he used juxtaposition and contrast to help convey the story even more. We also went on a bike ride to Sunset Cliffs to take some landscape photography shots. In chemistry we broke into our Project teams to get the ball rolling with what we were in charge of. Humanities: On Friday we were given the assignment to read John Steinbeck's intro to Of Mice and Men and find where he used juxtaposition and contrast to enrich the story. We did this in partnerships on a google doc where we answered four questions and highlighting and leaving comments where we thought certain elements of writing were being used. Click the first button to see what my partner and I found. We also had the task to pick one of our partners landscape photos, print it out in black and white and then write 300ish words about where there is contrast and juxtaposition. Click the second button to see what I wrote. We also went through a round of critique for our Steinbeck inspired landscape writing pieces. Click the last button to read my writing piece. Chemistry:
I am in the photo emulsion group and what we accomplished was test printing with metallic glossy photo paper. Going into it we thought we would have lots of extra tie in the week and even day to finish other work but we really didn't because this was trickier than we anticipated. The difficult part was finding the correct ICC profile to match the printer we were using. This is pretty much printing a series of colors on the paper, followed up by us making slight changes in the print settings until we got a match of colors. Summary: This week in humanities we watched a documentary about these two guys who hiked the entirety of the Pacific Crest Trail. It was really inspiring and made me want to hike it (not the whole thing though.) We had a writing assignment about one of favorite places inspired by John Steinbeck. In chemistry we had a photoshop workshop on landscape photos and we also did a light workshop where we learned more in depth about what light is. We even lit some elements on fire do see what color certain elements were when they burned. We also did had free work time in both classes. Humanities: This week we wrote and quick little write up describing our favorite place. The catch was that we had to write in the style of John Steinbeck and his intro to Of Mice and Men. I wrote about the softball fields because it is my home away from home. Click the button below to read my Steinbeck inspired writing. Chemistry: This week we had a photoshop workshop on landscape photos where we went out took some photos and then came back to class and processed them in photoshop. Below is my before and after landscape picture. Project Specialty: This week we also signed up for a project specialty. My specialty is B+W Silkscreen Printing. Our job is to develop our understanding of emulsion for screen printing and screen printing technique by creating photographic images on a variety of medium. Click the button below to see my group's project specialty progress report. Light Workshop: On tuesday we did a little lab on light being that is what our project revolves around. We watched a video about light and there was one quote that really stuck out to me. "Different atoms emit different colors of light, if we can measure that light, in principle we can determine what an object is made of, even if we can't touch it." So that is exactly what we did. We took eight different elements put them in contact with a controlled flame and observed what color light it emit. Below are the elements we used and the color that they emit.
Summary: This week Andrew was gone for the first couple of days of the week so we were responsible of coming up with our independent project proposals. We also continued to develop photos in the dark room. In humanities we started planning some field trips to go on to take landscape photos because we are moving into phase 2 of our project. We also started looking at landscape panoramas and writing about them. Humanities: This week towards the end of the week we had an assignment to look at landscape panos and then write a short 250-350 word piece on the composition of the photo and how it makes you feel or anything else you want. Below is the landscape pano that I chose to write about. Click the button below to read my writing piece. Chemistry: This week our main assignment was to finish our independent project proposals. My partners and I really enjoy baking so we wanted to figure out a way we could incorporate chemistry in baking. What we want to know is what will happen if we double the amount of yeats in a recipe for making donuts or any other recipe that no one has made before. We hope that we will make so pretty huge desserts or any other gigantic food. To read more about our proposal click the button below. Summary: This week was quite eventful. In humanities we had two socratic seminars, read another one of John Steinbeck's Harvest Gypsies articles, read and responded to questions about the Hetch Hetchy dam and other national water issues. In chemistry we made hydrogen balloons and I finally got to develop my photo and we also learned more details about possibly starting an independent project outside of our main one. Humanities: This week we had two socratic seminars based off of these statements/ questions. Wealthy are responsible for helping poor people. Agree or disagree? You are responsible for your own American dream. Agree or disagree? Although interesting one of our main focuses were different water issues around the nation. The Salton Sea: My group chose to read more into the situation in the Salton Sea. We were not very educated about what was going on so that is why we chose it. Click the button below to read some questions my group and I answered after our research. Hetch Hetchy: I didn't really know anything about the Hetch Hetchy dam until we talked about it in class, I didn't even know that there was a dam called Hetch Hetchy. After we talked about it as a class we were given the task to read and respond to some questions about Hetch Hetchy. Click the first button below to read the article by John Muir and click the second button to read my responses to the questions. Chemistry:
This week in chemistry we did an experiment on hydrogen balloons, coated more papers with emulsion and developed more photos! Hydrogen Balloons: During this lab our goal was to make, test, and question. We made and tested the balloons and then questioned/ observed why we thought things were happening. To make hydrogen balloons you need the following materials...
Questions from the lab:
